Rice Cooking Experience

A rice cooking experience is a pleasant way to enjoy a morning during a visit to Santa Pola. Most visitors to this lovely coastal town are here for sun, sea and sangria. Along with that goes all the superb water sports and activities where a good selection of bars, cafes and restaurants line the promenade behind the beaches and marina. However, adrenaline fuelled fun and frolics are not for everyone and the more discerning visitor may wish to try less taxing pursuits. Rice, and in particular paella, are one of Spain's most iconic dishes and not as easy to cook as you may think.

Rice Cooking Experience

Mandarina Blue are a well established travel and activity experience company. They offer many interesting tours and experiences on the Costa Blanca, including their rice cooking experience. The day starts at 10:00 when all participants meet their tour guide at Santa Pola's Tourist Information Centre next to the city hall. After introductions are made it's time for a gentle walk. During the walk your tour guide will tell you a bit about the traditional dishes of Santa Pola.

Time To Cook

The walk will eventually bring you to the restaurant where you will meet the chef. Then it's time to don your aprons and learn some tricks of the rice cooking trade. Cooking will be done in pairs using small paella pans. The dishes on offer are Arroz a Banda and Arroz Negra (Black Rice). Chef will explain the correct ingredients and cooking methods while supervising the group's cooking. Then comes time for the best part of the rice cooking experience, tasting it. When the dishes are ready all participants can sit down to enjoy lunch with salad, bread and drinks.
